Color Trends For 2012

Each year Benjamin Moore shares with us the color trends for the coming year. 2012 trends will be defined by the words "preservation" and "protection."
The concepts are based on "preserving" that which engages the past with the present. Themes include textures of homespun fabric, plaids, florals, native stripes, toile, paisleys, embroidery and denim. Colors include khaki, taupe, camel, sand and stone. Woodbark browns, earthy reds and golden and sunny yellows will be used to provide a lacquered shine to matte finishes.
Indigos and true-blue denims will border from luxury to casual appeal. Greens will enjoy a resurgence. Digital reds and organic oranges will be used to complement gray-scale combinations.
In terms of our “protection,” the space between living in isolation and belonging, the décor is bold. Spikes, abstract paintings, metal, multi-patterns, wire cages and feathers will illustrate our need for comfort, safety and security.
Coming soon, Filling Spaces can meet your window covering and bedding linen needs from our new location at 935 NW 19th.

There's a new fashion trend in textiles that originated with Mahatma Gandhi and is now sweeping the haute couture houses of fashion design. The textile is Khadi and Filling Spaces is participating with new design introductions.

"Mahatma Gandhi began promoting the spinning of khādī, made from cotton, for rural self-employment and self-reliance (instead of using cloth manufactured industrially in Britain).... The freedom struggle revolved around the use of khādī fabrics and the dumping of foreign-made clothes." Soon all Indian politicians would wear nothing but khadi. However, the appeal of khadi gradually declined due to political corruption. Khadi was soon only for the poor or corrupt. Now, the environmental movement has brought it back.

There is a growing interest in environmently-friendly, ethically manufactured, chemical-free and carbon neutral fabrics. Handmade khadi fabrics meet the fashion world’s exacting new ethical standards.

The one change Deepali Kalia owner of Filling Spaces offers with her new collection of khadi is the addition of jute and silk with cotton to make the fabrics appropriate for home furnishing.

Come see her new offerings in her new showroom opening in October at 935 NW 19th. There you can see her one-of-a-kind showcase of textiles, bedding, draperies, and pillows.
